Overview

At St. Martinus University, we are dedicated to shaping world-class physicians who are prepared to excel in the global healthcare landscape. Our Doctor of Medicine (MD) program offers a comprehensive and integrated curriculum designed to provide you with the foundational knowledge, clinical skills, and professional acumen necessary for a successful medical career, with a strong emphasis on preparing you for practice in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

The St. Martinus University MD program is a rigorous and rewarding journey structured across two distinct yet interconnected phases: the Basic Science Phase and the Clinical Science Phase. This comprehensive approach ensures that you not only gain a deep understanding of medical theory but also develop the practical experience and critical thinking vital for effective patient care. Our commitment to excellence is underscored by our internationally recognized accreditation by a WFME-recognized agency (AAEPO), ensuring that your education meets stringent global medical education standards and facilitates eligibility for ECFMG certification and U.S residency pathways.

Basic Science Phase

Building Your Foundational Medical Knowledge

The Basic Science program is an intensive two-year curriculum delivered at our state-of-the-art Curaçao Campus. This phase is meticulously designed to provide you with a robust understanding of the fundamental scientific principles that underpin medicine. Our distinguished faculty, comprised of medical experts with extensive experience, is dedicated to delivering world-class medical education, guiding you through complex subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and microbiology. The small teacher-student ratio of 1:6 ensures personalized attention and an environment conducive to in-depth learning and conceptual mastery.

This phase also strategically incorporates a 10-week USMLE preparation course at the end of the second year, ensuring you are well-prepared for the initial steps toward U.S. medical licensure. Our modern facilities, including the Cadaviz digital anatomy system and upgraded laboratories, provide hands-on learning experiences that bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application.

Clinical Science Phase

Mastering Patient Care and Clinical Rotations

The Clinical Science Program is a dynamic two-year phase, encompassing 74 weeks of intensive clinical rotations, including 48 weeks of core required rotations and 26 weeks of elective rotations. This crucial phase provides invaluable hands-on experience in diverse medical settings.

St. Martinus University’s extensive hospital network, particularly our unique relationship with Pontiac General Hospital in Michigan, USA, allows students to complete all core clinical rotations in one place without interruptions, a distinct advantage over other Caribbean medical schools. These rotations are also offered in Curaçao, Canada, and the UK, providing a broad spectrum of clinical exposure. You will actively engage in patient-related activities each semester, developing essential clinical skills, diagnostic abilities, and patient management strategies.

Our well-structured clinical curriculum, combined with dedicated teaching from faculty and residents, significantly benefits our students in their preparation for the crucial residency match process.

Curriculum

As of January 2017, SMUFOM has integrated a Systemic Curriculum to in Basic Science Program. We are among the first and only medical schools in the Caribbean to adopt this modern approach to medical studies. Our Systemic Curriculum allows for our students to be presented.

St. Martinus University has long been working on the development of a better approach to learning in the medical field. After months of careful analysis, SMUFOM has now integrated a new Systemic Approach to Medical Education consisting of the newest trends in medical teaching. This new method allows for the organized teaching of the same system in physiology, pathology, and pharmacology classes thereby leading to an increase in information retention due to facilitation in the process of association.
