Years Educating Future Medical Professionals
On May 9th, 2013, St. Martinus University, Faculty of Medicine became the newest entity to call the “Home on the Sharp Hill,” a.k.a. Huize Scherpenheuvel, home. On October 12th, after months of restoration and renovations, St. Martinus University officially opened its doors in this magnificent building.
AAEPO: Full Accreditation
St. Martinus University received full institutional accreditation, as well as program accreditation for its Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, from the Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs and Organizations (AAEPO) in 2023. The accreditation was granted for a five-year period following an external evaluation of the University and its medical education program against AAEPO’s established accreditation standards.
Full accreditation reflects SMU’s commitment to maintaining defined standards of educational quality, institutional effectiveness, academic governance, student support, and continuous quality improvement. It also provides an external framework through which the University continues to evaluate and strengthen the quality of its MD program and institutional operations.

ACCM: Accreditation in Process
St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine has applied for initial accreditation by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine and is currently undergoing the ACCM accreditation review process. International Recognition
Approvals
St. Martinus University has been formally chartered (#223056) by the Government of Curaçao since 2000. This charter grants St. Martinus University the right to confer the Doctor of Medicine degree upon its graduates, who will then be eligible for medical licensure. In addition, we are also recognized by the Ministry of Health of Curaçao.
St. Martinus University is also recognized by the Ministry of Health of Curaçao. This recognition reflects the University’s status as a medical education institution operating within Curaçao and its relationship with the governmental authority responsible for health and healthcare oversight on the island.
Together with the University’s governmental charter, this recognition reinforces SMU’s established institutional presence in Curaçao and its role in the education and training of future physicians.

The award highlights SMU’s academically rigorous and student-centered MD program, personalized faculty mentorship, practical clinical preparation, modern learning facilities, diverse international environment, and commitment to preparing compassionate, resilient physicians to serve multicultural and underserved communities worldwide.
